This may seem a no brainer but there is a method to styling a wedding. It’s not just table cloths and chair covers {yuch!} although your linens will play a part. Its not plopping a fairy light backdrop behind your top table. It’s also not just the flowers and centerpieces or decoration. And a wedding planner isn’t necessarily a stylist although she can help focus your ideas nor is a stylist always a wedding planner although some offer that service too.
Oh no. Have I confused you now?
Maybe I’ll start again back at the basics. Wedding styling is the total look of your wedding. The feel and atmosphere of the overall wedding from start to finish including the finer details that make your event unique. Creating an event that not only looks good but flows well.
Your wedding style should start with your personalities. Think about adding elements of how you met, what you have done together, your proposal, your careers {if you love what you do}, your hobbies, anything that is uniquely you {and I mean you plural}.
Wedding styling will incorporate your invitations, attire, decor and even meal choices into a cohesive feel.
Now that I have said all of that, I know you have seen styled wedding shoots. They are on blogs everywhere {including this one!} and they are fabulous. Styled shoots are great for inspiration but know your limits. Of course you can still have style in a basic hotel ballroom for 300 of your closest family and friends but it can take more effort to style than a loft space for 60.
So how do you style your wedding? Do some brainstorming with your fiance and discuss what your personal style is and what, if any, uniquely ‘you’ elements you will be using. Use those photo shoots and real weddings as inspiration and collect images of every detail and idea {it doesn’t even have to be wedding related} that reflect your own style to create an inspiration board. Then, choose your venue wisely. Look at venues that you can add to and not have to change to suit your style. After that you will have the vision in your head and can choose other elements to compliment.
